If you are familiar with the history of ancient Greece, you surely know about the Persian wars and Athens’ first significant victory against the Persian army in the Battle of Marathon, which took place in August or September, 490 BC. Legend has it that following this victory, a Greek messenger ran from the battlefield at Marathon to Athens in order to relay news of the victory and inform Athenians about an upcoming Persian counter-attack.He ran the entire distance of about 40km without stopping and burst into the assembly, exclaiming νενικήκαμεν (“nenikekamen”, “we have wοn”), before collapsing and dying.
This event gave birth to the term “Marathon” and every year, an event is organized where volunteers follow the same route as the messenger.
Experience the remarkable spirit of the ancient Greeks through a recreation of their unparalleled display of determination and nobility. Join us in the breathtaking setting of the Palace of the Grand Master of the Knights of Rhodes’ moat for a mini marathon covering approximately 5 km. Take part in this unforgettable event that honors the legacy of the messenger who once covered a much longer distance to deliver the news of Athens’ victory.
